A community library in Galloway, NJ, USA has gained viral attention on social media this week following a woman's post about her time living in her car in the library's parking lot.

"When I lived in my car, I parked in the lot of the local library all day and was never bothered," Kendra F wrote. "I used their bathroom throughout the day without any questions being asked, accessed the computers to sign up for food stamps and other programs, and even picked flowers from the lot to decorate my car."

Kendra highlighted that for many, libraries in the USA are not just buildings but safe spaces and even lifelines.

This story emerged shortly after California librarian Mychal Threets expressed his "library joy" upon being featured on the cover of the latest edition of the School Library Journal.

Who knew my little tweet would end up rallying people around supporting libraries! …I'm glad something good came out of my experience. If you haven't yet, get a library card and support your local library! They are safe havens for so many.

2. New Findings in Connexin Research Could Lead to Safer, More Effective Drugs for Brain and Heart

Researchers at the University of Geneva in Switzerland have made significant advancements in understanding how drugs interact with connexin proteins, which are crucial for cell communication.

Connexins form gap junctions, channels that allow direct message exchange between cells, essential for maintaining body functions. However, malfunctioning connexins can lead to disorders like epilepsy and heart arrhythmias.

A recent study focused on the connexin called Cx36, revealing how the antimalarial drug mefloquine binds to and blocks these channels, potentially explaining its severe neuropsychiatric side effects.

This discovery, facilitated by cryo-electron microscopy and computer simulations, paves the way for developing targeted drugs that can modulate connexin activity without adverse effects. This breakthrough can lead to improved treatments for a range of diseases, potentially transforming the lives of millions globally.

While not a recent event, the story of Stan Larkin continues to inspire and showcase the marvels of medical technology. This Michigan USA resident lived for an astounding 555 days without a heart, relying instead on a portable artificial heart system carried in a grey backpack.

This life-sustaining device developed by SynCardia allowed him to avoid hospitalization while awaiting a heart transplant. Despite his unusual condition, Larkin led an active life, even playing basketball, and looked like any other healthy young adult to onlookers.

Larkin’s heart transplant was successfully completed in May 2016 at the University of Michigan Frankel Cardiovascular Center, after which he expressed gratitude for the technology that kept him alive and well during the wait.

Larkin's story reminds us of human resilience and the life-changing potential of medical innovations. It offers hope and showcases the incredible strides being made in technology.
